A Satirical Analysis of the Smurf Community

Finally, Speculation May End

This article is of utmost importance and urgence, a social, political, economical analysis of whatever the deal is with Smurfs. The Smurf village is a sort of utopian community in which the needs of each individual are met. It is a literary portrayal of a harmonious ideology.  Perhaps the solution to all of humankind’s greed and hatred lies in this Belgian children's comic.

The Smurfs do not truly own anything; the notion of private property, to them, is completely unknown. They have no monetary system whatsoever, and Smurfs provide services to the community without demand for any form of payment. They supply the village with their labour out of altruism and love for their community, not unlike the world that might have come from the proletarian revolt described in the manifesto of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The Smurfs are not by semantic definition communist, but some aspects of their community would make a socialist drool like one of Ivan Pavlov's dogs. There is no totalitarian government forcing Smurfs to contribute to satisfying the needs of the village; they are completely free to relax whenever they want. In fact, they spend a large portion of their time sound asleep.
Smurf ideology resembles anarchy — they govern themselves and order is mostly maintained by the inherent virtue of Smurfkind. Their leader, Papa Smurf, does not mess with politics and merely mediates trivial conflict. However, the better part of his time is spent brewing potions in his dwelling.

Lack of industrialization in the village renders a government useless.  All material needs of Smurfs are sufficiently provided by their natural environment and the artisanal work of their fellow Smurf. Such resources need no management from any sort of establishment.

A judiciary system is also unnecessary; Smurfs are by nature neither greedy nor violent. The Smurf village may seem somewhat chaotic when observed from an external point of view, but remains in perfect order. Their community is so incredibly stable, that it stayed completely unchanged for approximately a hundred years. There have never been any social or political revolutions in the known past of the village. It is obvious to even the untrained eye that with the character of Smurfs and the flawlessness of their  ideology, change is quite nearly impossible.

If humans were not by nature greedy and contemptuous, such a village would be possible in our world. In reality, it would be incredibly stupid to trust the stability of a community on the good virtue of humans. The harmony of the Smurf village is simply unachievable with humans. This is yet another sign that humans are despicable creatures, capable of destroying their world and all the beauty that lies within it.
